4 Easy Ways to Support Heart Health

by Annie-Eliza Stevens on Aug 28 2023
Reading Time: 3 minutes How’s your heart doing? Heart health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, but unfortunately, many diseases and conditions can have a negative effect on the heart, such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, or coronary artery disease. Heart issues can lead to an array of complications and long-term health concerns, including stroke, dementia, and diabetes. However, there are some easy ways that you can take to support your heart health and live your best life without changing your entire lifestyle.  Swap 20 Minutes of Social Media for Movement Come on—we all do it. How many hours are you wracking up on your phone each day?  We love videos of cats doing cute things as much as the next person, but a sedentary lifestyle that's common with extended periods of sitting and scrolling on social media can lead to poor heart health. And even if you're checking your phone for five minutes here and there, take that time aside and put it towards moving your body. Regular physical activity supports good cardiovascular health, so rather than spending 20 minutes on your phone or laptop, take a walk around the block or do some stretches in your living room. The cat videos will be there when you get back. Reduce Sodium and Add Flavor High-sodium diets are linked to an increase in blood pressure, which puts additional strain on the heart. And unfortunately, the American diet is on average high in sodium. Make an effort to reduce your salt intake by avoiding processed foods and adding sauces and seasonings. Try not to put salt on the dinner table before eating so you aren't tempted to add more. Reducing the takeout and going out to eat can help too, as dishes at restaurants are largely unregulated in terms of ingredients and you can't be sure how much is in your order. Food prepping for the week can make it less tempting to go out.  If you like to cook, discover new spices and flavors that you can add to a dish while cutting back the sodium. Where you would normally add a bunch of salt to a recipe, cut down the amount you use. Instead, use fresh herbs and spices like garlic and turmeric to add flavor to your dishes. Swap In Plant-Based Once a Day Ditching animal-based proteins (like beef, pork, and eggs) for plant-based alternatives like beans, legumes, or tofu can help improve heart health too. That's because plant-based foods are lower in saturated fat and cholesterol than animal proteins. Saturated fat and cholesterol are bad for heart health, as they can increase your LDL cholesterol levels and clog up your arteries. Swapping in plant-based proteins once a day is an easy way to support your heart health. Try adding chickpeas to a salad instead of chicken, or using plant-based crumbles instead of beef on Taco Night.  And again, just like with fruits and veggies, it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing thing—start by swapping out one meal item a day for something plant-based and go from there. There are so many options now! If you're an absolute carnivore and the switch feels too hard, try starting out with cutting red meat and swapping it for fish or chicken a couple of times a week, which are meat options lower in cholesterol and saturated fat. If you're struggling with ideas of what to make for dinner, try looking up some recipes online that focus on using mainly plant ingredients. We have some recipes here in our blog. Supplements for Heart Health  Even if you are eating a balanced diet, taking additional supplements is a good idea to consider with your medical professional. It's quick, easy to do, and relatively cost-effective.  There are several supplements that can support heart health in the long run: Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine and other foods, supports a lower risk of heart disease CoQ10 is an antioxidant that supports energy production & healthy cell function, including red blood cells Magnesium promotes lower, more regulated blood pressure levels Calcium promotes strong & healthy bones while also supporting your heart Conclusion Your heart health is important and there are many steps you can take to support it that don't feel like an overhaul of your entire lifestyle. No matter what changes you make—big or small—think of it as an investment in yourself. It's never too late to start taking care of yourself. Aim for a balanced diet, more movement and less tech, getting plenty of fruits & veggies, switching to plant-based meals once in a while, and talking to your doctor about supplements. Remember, small changes add up over time and your heart will thank you for taking the necessary steps to protect it.

The Best Ways to Take Care of Your Heart This American Heart Month

by Annie-Eliza Stevens on Feb 10 2023
Read Time: 4 minutes February is American Heart Month. What better time to talk about taking care of your cardiovascular health? We're in favor of everyone adopting some healthy habits (and stopping a few unhealthy ones) to support their best health. Here are some of the best ways to be smart about your heart this year and a special limited-time offer. Quit Smoking This one might be obvious, but smoking cigarettes isn't great for your health. In fact, smoking is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease. If you smoke, it increases your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. Smoking is linked to heart disease in that it damages your arteries and thereby reducing blood flow to your heart muscle over time, and increasing the risk for blood clots that form deep inside an artery or vein. There are many programs and aids that can help in your journey to quit, try experimenting and seeing what works best for you. Limit Alcohol Intake Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and drinking too much can raise your blood pressure and increase your risk for heart disease. People who drink alcohol should limit themselves to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. Is happy hour calling your name after work? If you don't want to quit entirely, try reducing how much alcohol you consume each day as much as possible. Reduce Stress Stress is a huge trigger for heart disease, so it's important to reduce stress in your life. Try these tips to reduce stress: Get moving. A brisk morning walk or evening jog can help you clear your mind and improve your mood. Exercise can lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels, which are major risk factors for heart disease. Breathe deeply and slowly whenever you feel stressed out—this calms the sympathetic nervous system that controls our "fight-or-flight" response to stress (and also happens to be good for overall health). Spend more time with friends and loved ones; social support has been shown to support your wellness against stressors like money troubles or relationship issues. Prevent Diabetes According to the American Heart Association (AHA), diabetes is a serious condition that affects nearly 30 million Americans. In fact, it's considered one of the greatest public health challenges in the United States today. And while this disease can lead to serious complications like heart disease and stroke, you can lower your chances of developing diabetes by eating healthier foods, exercising regularly, and losing weight if necessary. Supplements for Heart Health There are several supplements that can support heart health. Here are the best ones to take: Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine and other foods, has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and more CoQ10 is an antioxidant that supports energy production & healthy cells within the body Magnesium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure as well as other signs of cardiovascular disease (CVD) Calcium promotes strong & healthy bones while supporting your heart Conclusion Heart health is a lifelong commitment, but small changes can make a big difference! Getting regular exercise and eating a healthy diet are great first steps to lowering your risk of heart disease.  You don’t need to change everything at once—start by making one change every week until you’re on track. Try starting with a daily vitamin supplement that’s beneficial for heart health and is a simple yet effective way to support your quality of life in the long run. The Best Supplements for Aging Gracefully

by Annie-Eliza Stevens on Feb 15 2022
Read Time: 4 minutes Many of us hope to “age well”, as they say. While that may look and feel different from person to person, aging is a process that affects us all. And aging well isn’t just about looks nor is it a superficial sentiment; it’s a process that affects our bodies holistically. Supporting our health and wellness as we age is the best form of self-care, and there are so many ways to do it. One of the easiest ways to take care of your mental and physical wellness through all stages of life is taking supplements daily. Here are the top supplements for supporting your best life—here’s to getting older but not feeling older! Work Out Like a Pro Exercise and remaining physically fit is key to supporting your musculoskeletal system and mental wellness as you age. CoQ10 supplements may help support enhanced physical performance and energy levels during exercise. This is because free radical damage negatively impacts muscle function, and CoQ10 has been shown in studies to help decrease oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Stress-Free is the Way to Be Did you know that stress prematurely ages you, both externally and internally? Protect your mind and body from excessive mental strain by taking L-theanine daily, which supports lower cortisol levels (aka stress hormones). Then take melatonin at night to support your circadian rhythm and a good night’s sleep. Sleep is when your body repairs itself and supports cognitive functioning. Beautiful Skin at Any Age There are many supplements that claim to support glowy, healthy skin. And while it’s helpful to have external skin care, rubbing in a cream or serum will only target the area you put it on. For overall skin health, try biotin for cell turnover and production, vitamin C for even, bright skin tone and collagen synthesis, as well as vitamin A which protects collagen. No Bones About It A decline in bone density and conditions like osteoarthritis, which cause brittle, weak bones are common as we age. Heart issues and heart disease are also common in aging adults. Work to combat this now with calcium! This mineral is essential to your health and can only be found externally in our food sources. Calcium is widely known as being associated with bone growth and strength, as well as cardiovascular health. It also aids with blood clotting. Want to enhance the absorption and transfer of calcium to your bones? Pair it with D3 + K2. Remember to Take Care of Cognitive Health Memories matter, and so does brain health. As we age, our brain cells can decline in productivity or regeneration, and certain diseases such as Alzheimer’s are more likely to develop. Act now to lower the likelihood of cognitive impairment and try a supplement like resveratrol. Resveratrol, commonly found in supplement form, might have anti-aging properties, including stimulating cell regeneration, warding off extra pounds, and even helping with glucose intolerance. The EZ Melts Difference You can find supplements everywhere these days…it’s finding quality products that counts when it comes to your health. Shocking Truths About Vitamin Deficiencies in the US—And the 5 Most Popular Supplements

by Annie-Eliza Stevens on Nov 10 2021
Read time: 3 minutes There are so many factors that go into our health and nutrition, including where and how we live our lives. The amount of vitamins and minerals we take in—and which ones— are affected by our environment. For example, our work hours and office culture, whether it rains or shines more, how frequently we get outside (or can get outside) into nature, and regional diets all affect what kind of vitamins and minerals we get.  Many people end up taking vitamin supplements to meet their nutritional needs when their food and lifestyle alone don’t cut it. In fact, the percentage of Americans who take supplements on a daily basis reached an all-time high in 2019, coming in at 77% of the total population!  Read on to learn about the most common deficiencies, and for the list of the 5 most sought-after supplements in the US today.   Most Common Deficiencies In 2020, according to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, people in the US have deficiencies in:  Vitamin A: around 25% of adults Vitamin D: 42% of adults in the US are deficient, likelihood can increase with age and according to race Vitamin C: 7% of US adults Others include: Iron: one of the most common worldwide, affecting at least 25% of adults Folate: around 20% of the adult population Protein: around 46% of the older population in the US Vitamin B12: up to 90% of vegetarians and vegans may be deficient in vitamin B12 Deficiencies can be in large part due to said environmental factors, health conditions (like anemia), medication, pregnancy, age, gender, social factors and education surrounding nutrition, taking the wrong types of supplements, or even taking supplements that are ineffective and not shelved properly.  The first thing you can do is make sure you consult your medical provider to ensure you are bridging the gaps if you have any and take the right, quality supplements that fit your lifestyle. Most Popular Vitamins in 2020 According to a recent study, the top 5 most popular supplements taken across the board in the United States are multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium, vitamin C, and B-complex, in that order.  Multivitamin: A multivitamin is often used as a catch-all for people who are concerned about their health and want to support a healthy lifestyle. There are different kinds according to gender, age, and so on, and they come in many different types of tablets, but make sure you are taking one that isn’t full of additives or chemicals. Regardless, most multivitamins contain an array of vitamins and minerals essential to your health. If you and your doctor have a specific deficiency in mind, it might be worth considering supplements only containing certain vitamins and minerals.  Vitamin D: Aids in calcium absorption by helping with cell transportation of nutrients. In general vitamin D supports major organs, proper immune function, and the musculoskeletal system. It also helps support your mood and energy levels throughout the day. Calcium: Calcium is widely known as being associated with bone growth and strength, as well as cardiovascular health. It also aids with blood clotting. This mineral is essential to your health and can only be found externally in our food sources. Vitamin C: Known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is vital in forming bone, muscle, tissue, and skin. It’s a powerful antioxidant that boosts your immune system response and fights free radicals (vitamin C is responsible for boosting your body’s natural collagen production, which = healthier, younger looking skin). Vitamin B-complex: B-complex supplements should cover at least eight essential B vitamins, and are safe to take even if you do get some of your vitamin Bs through nutrition. B vitamins support your brain, immune system, metabolism, energy levels, and much more. Vitamin B-complex also supports heart health, which is good news especially for men, who are at higher risk of heart disease and other heart conditions.  The EZ Melts Promise Try our EZ Melts supplements for their customer-approved, all natural flavor, and their non-GMO and vegan promise. A Woman’s Cheat Sheet to 5 Essential Vitamins

by Annie-Eliza Stevens on Aug 02 2021
Read time: 4 minutes While everyone needs balanced nutrition, women’s bodies have specific needs that need to be met when it comes to vitamins. Many women go through so many changes throughout their life. For example, when a person becomes pregnant or is breastfeeding, nutritional needs change even further. It can be hard to keep track of all of the vitamins and minerals one gets in their diet, on top of making sure it is all balanced, quality nutrition. Supplements make it easy for women to fill the gaps...but what vitamins specifically should women be focusing on? We sifted through all the research and created this handy guide so you know exactly what to look for in minutes. Iron Iron is a mineral that is critical to endurance, strength, and vitality. Iron is essential for blood to carry oxygen through your body. It’s also necessary to create blood cells in general, hence why a shortage of iron = higher risk of conditions like anemia. And pregnant women need to nearly double their intake, because it aids in neurological development and is essential for growth in children. The recommended daily dosage for women (not including pregnant women) is around 18mg, according to the NIH. Folate Folate is the form of B9 which is found in foods, while folic acid is the synthetic version of B9. Both are safe, approved by the FDA, and equally useful. Folate is found in whole foods such as leafy greens like spinach and broccoli, chickpeas and kidney beans, liver, and more. Folic acid supplements are one of the most important vitamins to add to a daily regimen when pregnant. This is because, during the gestation of a fetus, a person’s body needs to increase the production of DNA, which requires folic acid. Taking folic acid supplements when pregnant can decrease the likelihood of congenital heart defects and other birth defects, preterm birth, and ectopic pregnancy.  However it’s important for every woman. Folic acid, along with the other seven B vitamins, supports a healthy metabolism by breaking down carbohydrates into fuel for energy. Vitamin B9 also helps support an even mood and emotional health and has been found to aid other vitamins in lowering the risk of heart disease. The daily recommended dosage for non-gestating women is 400mcg, according to the NIH. Calcium Women are more prone to developing osteoporosis and other bone diseases than men are. Work to combat this now with calcium! Medical professionals recommend slightly different amounts according to age groups, but the fact remains the same: this mineral is essential to your health and can only be found externally in our food sources. Calcium is widely known as being associated with bone growth and strength, as well as cardiovascular health. It also aids with blood clotting. For women, the NIH recommends anywhere from 1000-1300mg daily, but it varies depending on age. Biotin Biotin does a lot more than take care of hair, skin, and nail health—but that’s certainly a bonus. Biotin, or vitamin B7, is incredibly important. It supports our thyroid gland and hormone production, helps with fetal development during pregnancy, and also helps your metabolism. According to the NIH, the recommended daily dose for adult women is 30-35 mcg, but recommendations do vary. Vitamin D Vitamin D not only aids in calcium absorption by helping with cell transportation of nutrients. In general vitamin D supports major organs, proper immune function, and the musculoskeletal system. It also helps support your mood and energy levels throughout the day. A lot of people get vitamin D3 through sunlight, but not enough. There are many with vitamin D deficiency, so try pairing your outdoor time with a supplement. The recommended daily dose by the NIH in adult women is around 600 IU, or 15 mcg, but it may vary according to your needs. Five Sources of Calcium Besides Dairy - EZ Melts

Five Sources of Calcium Besides Dairy

by Annie-Eliza Stevens on Jun 15 2021
Read time: 3 minutes   When we hear calcium, we all are probably imagining cows at pasture and a tall glass of cold milk. This is probably in large part to the popularity in recent decades of commercials talking about how the calcium in dairy products build strong bones. Unfortunately, people without access to dairy or who follow a vegan diet miss out on a large source of calcium. But this mineral is in so many products other than dairy—you just have to know where to look. Here are five sources of calcium that you might not expect. Green Leafy Vegetables Green cruciferous vegetables are perfect for those who can’t eat dairy. In the United States, vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli, and brussels sprouts are excellent sources of calcium and are in abundance at markets everywhere. Add them as a side dish for dinner, or look up some inventive recipes for colorful, flavor-packed salads—greens don’t have to be boring! Bread and Products with Fortified Flour Any excuse to eat bread, right? Well here is a good one: most bread products and whole grain cereals contain a healthy dose of calcium when made with fortified flour. Look at the nutrition label to be sure, and stock up on whole grains. The complex carbohydrates will keep you energized and satisfied while providing a good amount of calcium to your diet. Dry or Canned Beans Beans are a flexible household staple that is vegan-friendly and loaded with nutrients. Whether dry or canned, beans can provide iron, protein, carbs, and calcium to a diet that is lacking. Try making a cold bean salad for any summer gathering or making it a point to add beans to chilis, stews, and side dishes for a big boost to your calcium intake. Almonds Almonds, whether raw, roasted, slivered or otherwise are an incredible source of calcium and very versatile to eat. While not the biggest amount of calcium on the list, almonds contain a significant amount and are a great addition to trail mixes, salads, roasted chicken dishes, vegetables as a topping, or in a sandwich in the form of almond butter. Snacks and meals alike will be taken to the next level with this healthy and delicious nut! Tofu Tofu, made from soy protein, is a huge staple in many kitchens today. Whether vegan, vegetarian, omnivore, tofu is a versatile product that is made by solidifying soy milk. Make sure the tofu you choose is fortified with calcium for the maximum benefit. Soy products typically contain a large amount of protein, amino acids, and calcium, just to name a few. It’s great for stir-fries, sandwiches in place of meat, salads, as cheese substitutes, or just a snack on its own. Cooked or raw, tofu is a healthy treat that takes on the flavors of the spices you add to it, which is why it can be used in such a wide range of dishes. Support Your Body with Calcium In addition to a strong skeletal system, calcium supports the contraction of muscles and aids in physical movement, as well as making sure blood clots normally. Are you vegan or dairy sensitive and not sure if you are getting enough calcium? Consider adding the EZ Melts’ calcium supplement to your daily routine. Our vitamins are fast melting and have a delicious customer-approved flavor. Unlike many major vitamin brands, our tablets are vegan and do not include harmful ingredients, artificial flavors, or GMOs. Try us out and see the difference!  ___   Written by Annie-Eliza Stevens

A Woman’s Key to Radiant Health

by Annie-Eliza Stevens on Jan 21 2021
Many people, especially women, focus on outward appearances. We spend so much money and time in an effort to look good, we often forget to make sure we feel good too. At EZ Melts, we believe beauty radiates from the inside, and when you take care of your health, it shows! Making sure you get all essential vitamins and minerals is a huge step in the right direction, but unfortunately, most of us don’t. Did you know that 92% of Americans today are nutrient-deficient? There’s lots of room for improvement here! Biologically speaking, when talking about essential nutrients, females and males should focus on different daily amounts and different supplements regardless of gender identity. Here are some of the key vitamins and minerals women should pay extra attention to--and scroll down for a special offer on all of them!   Vitamin D According to research, about 42% of Americans today are vitamin D deficient! Low levels of vitamin D are linked to out-of-whack autoimmune responses, mood swings, and chronic skin conditions. Taking a D3 supplement will promote healthy cell growth and turnover, proper immune function, bone health, and a strong musculoskeletal system. Calcium Female bodies are more prone to developing osteoporosis and other bone diseases. Work to combat this now with calcium!  Medical professionals recommend slightly different amounts according to age groups, but the fact remains the same: this mineral is essential to your health and can only be found externally in our food sources.  Calcium is widely known as being associated with bone growth and strength, as well as cardiovascular health! And vitamin D3, mentioned above, aids in cellular transport of calcium, so pair it with a D3 supplement!   Biotin Biotin is connected with supporting luscious hair, strong nails, and beautiful, glowing skin. But did you know that on top of this, biotin does so much more? It can support lower cholesterol levels, promotes fetal development, weight control, and thyroid health, among other benefits.   Multivitamin Through evolution, our bodies lost the ability to create many nutrients on their own due to getting them through our food sources. Therefore, our bodies need to get many essential nutrients by eating and metabolizing them. Supplements are a great, quick, and cost-effective way to ensure you are getting maximum health benefits, and pairing a multivitamin with specific supplements only works to ensure you get everything you need!   The Full Package The ability to convert vitamins and minerals into digestible nutrition in the body is called bioavailability, and it is proven that combining specific vitamins and minerals together can enhance the absorption--supporting better health! Especially if you identify as vegan, pregnant, or more senior in age, taking supplements can support optimal health and wellness (with a doctor’s recommendation). EZ Melts’ Biotin, Calcium, D3, and Multivitamin are key for women’s optimal health. They can all be bought separately on our website--but make it easier AND less costly when you buy the EZ Melts Essential Women’s Health Bundle at a discount! Use THIS Solution for Maximizing Calcium Absorption!

by Annie-Eliza Stevens on Sep 05 2020
We’ve talked about a lot of vitamins and minerals on their own, but some of them have to be in the spotlight together. For example, these three: calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D together! Calcium, D3, or magnesium on their own are way less effective than getting them all together. Teamwork makes the dream work! Why? Because when you take the ideal amount of all essential nutrients, they work together to enhance the benefits and absorption. Here are quick recaps of all three and the science behind combining them together, like in our Calcium supplement!   1. Calcium No bones about it--You need adequate calcium throughout your entire life [1]. Medical professionals recommend slightly different amounts according to age groups, but the fact remains the same: this mineral is essential to your health and can only be found externally in our food sources. Calcium is widely known as being associated with bone growth and strength, as well as connection with protecting against osteoporosis and brittle bones in old age. However as previously mentioned, just taking calcium alone isn’t enough. This is because it won’t be adequately absorbed if you have a vitamin D deficiency, as vitamin D3 aids in cellular transport of calcium [2].   2. Vitamin D3 According to current research, about 42% of people in the United States are D deficient [3]! That’s worrisome considering all that vitamin D does for our bodies, such as bone health, energy levels, blood pressure, and a suggested link to reducing the risk of certain cancers [4]. Deficiency can be due to diet, minimal sunlight exposure, health conditions such as celiac or chronic kidney/liver disease, and even from something like long-term heartburn medication! However for the majority of us, low levels and the corresponding symptoms can be remedied with OTC supplements. If you think you may be deficient, talking to your doctor first is recommended. Normal vitamin D levels should be between 20-80 NG/ML.   3. Magnesium 60% of magnesium is found in your skeletal system, and it is absorbed through food and/or supplements [5]. Many people however, are deficient, despite this mineral being necessary to function and live! Magnesium has been linked to fighting off depression, migraines, and is involved in literally hundreds of biochemical processes in your body, such as DNA creation and energy levels [5]. Unfortunately, like calcium, magnesium is not as readily bioavailable without certain other vitamins and minerals--most prevalently, vitamin D. In studies, increased levels of vitamin D help your intestines absorb more magnesium [6]. Calcium has also been found to partner with magnesium [6]. It’s safe to say that EZ Melts’ Calcium Plus supplement containing all three of these nutrients is going to push your body into maximum absorption mode!   The EZ Melts Solution The ability to convert vitamins and minerals into digestible nutrition in the body is called bioavailability, and it is proven that combining specific vitamins and minerals together can enhance the absorption--supporting better health!  Especially if you identify as vegan, pregnant [7], or more senior in age [8], taking supplements can support optimal health and wellness. A lot of these nutrients are easily found in animal products, but not always in plant-based foods. This can make it even harder to make sure your body gets what it needs. So why take three supplements when you can take one? Save time and money with EZ Melts’ Calcium & Magnesium: magnesium, vitamin D3, and calcium in one powerful, delicious dose. The best part: They are non-GMO, vegan, and fast-melting with customer-approved, 100% natural flavors.
